Chapter 10

Sweets were coming off ration!

We’d heard it was going to happen but, never having experienced anything other than rationing, we didn’t know what it meant.   Then the day dawned and Uncle Doug seemed to have a bottomless pocket.   He gave tanner after tanner to Jean, Elsie and me and Mom let me go with them to Carter’s shop just round the corner.

“And mind how you cross that Staveley Road ,” she fretted.

We went back time and time again.   I don’t think Mrs. Carter had ever done such a trade.   Later on, she told us she’d sold out and we weren’t sorry!

After that day, we went back to the amount of sweets we’d been used to during rationing.
