To My Daughter

Child,

That is what you are

And will always be to me.

You are small now,

Though you will protest at that,

My big eight-year old.

Child,

You take my time away

From your Mother or my work

With your fidgeting.

Where do you get your energy

And voice which never stops?

Child,

I look at you at night

And sometimes hold my breath,

So still you rest.

Then, I pray with all my heart

That we may stay together.

1st Nov., 1976.
